Akshaya Tritiya 2026 - Auspicious gold buying and Halkhata rituals in West Bengal

About Akshaya Tritiya(উৎসব পরিচিতি)

Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akti or Akha Teej, is one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar. The word 'Akshaya' means 'eternal' or 'never-diminishing'. In Bengal, this day is celebrated with immense devotion, marking a time for new beginnings, significant investments in gold, and the starting of the new fiscal year for many businesses through the 'Halkhata' ceremony.

History: Legend states that Lord Ganesha began writing the epic Mahabharata on this day at the request of Sage Vyasa. It is also believed to be the day when Goddess Ganga descended from heaven to earth. In Bengal, the day holds ancestral value as the beginning of many agricultural cycles and is historically recognized as an 'Abujh Muhurat' (unendingly auspicious timing).

Significance: Akshaya Tritiya is synonymous with prosperity. In West Bengal, buying gold or silver on this day is believed to bring lasting wealth. It is also the day for 'Halkhata', where traders open their new ledgers and offer sweets to loyal customers, following the tradition started after Pohela Boishakh.
