Surya Grahan - The dramatic solar eclipse phenomenon

About Surya Grahan(উৎসব পরিচিতি)

Surya Grahan, or the Solar Eclipse, is a spectacular astronomical event that happens when the Moon successfully passes entirely between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily casting a deep shadow over the Earth. While globally viewed as an awe-inspiring scientific phenomenon, in deep Hindu tradition, an eclipse is a highly sensitive spiritual period (Sutak). The period demands intense meditation, rigorous fasting, and subsequent massive cleansing rituals to ward off negative cosmic energies.

History: In breathtaking Hindu mythology, eclipses are deeply rooted in the chaotic Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). It is famously believed that the decapitated head of the cunning demon Rahu periodically swallows the Sun as vicious revenge for exposing his attempt to steal the nectar of immortality (Amrit).

Significance: The period explicitly preceding and immediately during an eclipse (Sutak Kaal) is universally considered inauspicious for starting new tasks. However, it is an exceptionally powerful and potent time for chanting ancient mantras and performing charity, which allegedly yields thousand-fold spiritual returns.

Rituals & How to Celebrate

Observing rigorous Sutak (a period of absolute abstention from eating and cooking).
Widespread placement of holy Tulsi (basil) leaves in stored food to prevent radiation contamination.
Vigorous chanting of the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra or Gayatri Mantra.
Taking a vigorously purifying holy bath strictly after the precise end of the eclipse.
