Understanding Bengali and Islamic Calendars

Both the Bengali calendar and the Islamic calendar hold deep religious and cultural value, especially in Bengal and the wider Indian subcontinent where they coexist. However, their calculation methodologies are structurally different:

Bengali Calendar (Solar)

Based on solar cycles (transits of the Sun through zodiac constellations). Each solar year contains 365 or 366 days, aligning perfectly with the seasonal cycle. Months begin on specific transit days (Sankranti).

Islamic Calendar (Lunar)

A purely lunar calendar depending entirely on the phases of the Moon. A year lasts roughly 354 or 355 days. Therefore, Islamic months shift backwards by 10 to 11 days every year relative to solar seasons.

This converter dynamically calculates the dates for both calendars, serving as an essential tool for cross-referencing festivals (such as Eid, Ramadan, Shab-e-Barat) against traditional Bengali agricultural milestones and dates.
