About Dol Jatra (Holi)(উৎসব পরিচিতি)
Dol Jatra 2026, the unique Bengali celebration of colors, is dedicated to the eternal love of Lord Krishna and Radha. Celebrated on the full moon day of Boishakh, it marks the arrival of Spring (Basanta) with vibrant Abir (dry colors) and devotional fervor. Unlike the pan-Indian Holi, Dol Jatra in Bengal is a deeply cultural event, famously highlighted by the iconic Basanta Utsav in Shantiniketan.
History: The festival traces its roots to the Krishna legends and the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. In Bengal, Dol Jatra is also observed as the birth anniversary of the great saint Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The word 'Dol' refers to the beautifully decorated swing on which idols of Krishna and Radha are placed and celebrated with music and songs.
Significance: Dol Jatra is a celebration of inclusive joy and the harmony of nature. For Bengalis, it is a day where social barriers dissolve under layers of colorful Abir. The Shantiniketan celebration, started by Rabindranath Tagore, remains a global draw where students perform Tagore's spring songs in a sea of yellow attire.
