About Magh Bihu(উৎসব পরিচিতি)
Magh Bihu, also known as Bhogali Bihu, is a deeply cherished harvest festival celebrated with tremendous enthusiasm across Assam and parts of Bengal. Marking the end of the harvesting season in the month of Magh, it translates essentially to 'Feasting and Enjoyment' (Bhog meaning eating and enjoyment). While Makar Sankranti sweeps the rest of the nation, the eastern regions celebrate this day by building makeshift huts of bamboo and leaves called 'Bhelaghar', around which entire communities gather for grand nighttime feasts.
History: Rooted in the ancient agricultural practices of the Brahmaputra valley, Magh Bihu stands as a testament to the agrarian roots of the region. Historically, it was a time when farmers, having harvested and stored their crops, gave thanks to the gods of fire (Agni) and agriculture. The burning of the Mejhi (bonfire) at dawn is a centuries-old tradition symbolizing the burning away of the old and the welcoming of the new harvest.
Significance: The essence of Magh Bihu lies in community bonding and the sharing of food. It is a time for people to forget their differences, sit around the warmth of the Bhelaghar bonfire, and partake in grand community feasts. Young people spend the night preparing the Mejhi, singing traditional Bihu songs, and playing community games.
