About Makar Sankranti(উৎসব পরিচিতি)

Makar Sankranti, warmly known as Poush Sankranti in Bengal, marks the highly auspicious transition of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara). It is a joyous harvest festival celebrated with immense enthusiasm. The highlight of the day is the making of traditional sweets (Pithe and Puli) using newly harvested rice, freshly grated coconut, and the seasonal delicacy, liquid date palm jaggery (Nolen Gur).

History: Historically and astronomically, the festival marks the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of longer, warmer days. In Bengal, it is deeply tied to the agrarian identity of the delta region, honoring the Earth's fertility and the Sun's life-giving energy. The day also holds massive mythological significance due to the Gangasagar Mela, commemorating the descent of the holy river Ganges to Earth.

Significance: It is a celebration of prosperity and agricultural abundance. In West Bengal, the Gangasagar Mela attracts millions of pilgrims for a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganges and the Bay of Bengal.
